The emergency departments at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital are both Level 1 Trauma Centers and tertiary treatment centers.
Level 1 is the highest level of trauma care available. Key elements of a Level I trauma center include 24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons, and prompt availability of care from specialists in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, internal medicine and critical care.
BARNES-JEWISH HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
Patients are treated by board-certified Washington University physicians who are trained to handle the most severe injuries and provide rapid diagnostic testing for several conditions, including chest pain, abdominal pain, and altered consciousness or weakness.
The level 1 trauma center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a major center for the treatment of heart attack and a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. Washington University physicians continue to lead research in the treatment of these disorders.
Other conditions commonly treated include fractured bones, obstetric and gynecological problems, burns, poisoning and wounds.
The emergency department trauma center has dedicated areas for intake and triage, round-the-clock access to blood or blood products, 24-hour radiology, ultrasound and CT scan services.
ST. LOUIS CHILDREN’S EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
St. Louis Children’s Hospital is the only pediatric trauma center in Missouri and Illinois to be verified nationally by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. This means that Children’s Hospital has the highest level of resources, specialists and programs available to treat your child.
Washington University physicians also provide pediatric emergency services at the Children’s Emergency Room at Missouri Baptist Medical Center.
