GENERAL X-RAY
Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Saturday, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
To schedule an appointment, call 314-996-8080
Low doses of radiation are passed through the tissues and cast images, or shadows, onto film or a fluorescent screen. They can show bones, organs and internal tissues.
MAMMOGRAPHY
Screening appointments:
Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Diagnostic appointments:
Monday-Friday, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
To schedule an appointment, call 314-996-8080
Mammography is the best test for identifying breast cancer in its earliest stage - when it is most responsive to treatment. Both screening and diagnostic mammograms are done at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. A female technologist, certified in the use of mammography equipment, will assist female patients. A radiologist will read your mammogram and contact your doctor with the results.
MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI)
Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
To schedule an appointment, call 314-996-8080
Magnetic resonance imaging is based on interactions between the magnetic field of a large magnet in the imaging equipment and the atoms in your body. Pictures produced show the body's most intricate workings, and help solve problems that are difficult or impossible to diagnose by other imaging methods.
During the procedure, you will lie awake on a sliding table within the magnet. No part of the MRI equipment will touch your body, and you will feel no sensation or discomfort. With our new, high-speed MRI equipment, the examination will take about one hour, with the actual scanning procedure occurring intermittently during this time.
NUCLEAR MEDICINE IMAGING
Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
To schedule an appointment, call 314-996-8080
Nuclear medicine procedures, commonly called "scans," provide information about both the body and the shape, size and function of its organs. A chemical compound that contains a small amount of radioactive substance is administered either into a vein, by mouth or through a breathing device. A special detector, called a camera, is then placed close to the part of the body being studied, and a number of images are taken. The chemical is quickly eliminated from the body - usually within hours.
ULTRASONOGRAPHY
Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
To schedule an appointment, call 314-996-8080
A sonogram, or ultrasound scan, uses high-frequency sound waves that pass into tissue in brief bursts. The echoes are electronically processed and transformed into images shown on a video screen. It provides information about internal organs, such as the liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and heart, as well as the flow of blood in arteries or veins.
COMPUTERIZED TOMOGRAPHY (CT)
Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
To schedule an appointment, call 314-996-8080
Using spiral CT equipment, this X-ray scanning technique creates a 3-D image of the body's internal organs, showing soft tissue and organs that would not be visible on a regular X-ray.
What about insurance coverage ?
We participate in most insurance plans applicable to the St Louis area. If your insurance plan requires a pre-certification or referral prior to your visit, please arrange for the referral to be made beforehand.
