International Health - Centers of Excellence: Endocrine Cancer

Overview

The Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University in Saint Louis in St. Louis is the world leader in the treatment of tumors of the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas and adrenal glands, as well as neuroendocrine tumors of other sites, including carcinoid tumors.Jeff Moley

All four endocrine surgeons are members of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.

Dr. Moley, pictured at right, serves on its council.

They represent the largest endocrine surgical practice in the United States.

Experience

Together, they have strong experience in treating hereditary endocrine syndromes, including Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN) syndromes; they also follow thousands of patients with hereditary and sporadic tumors.

Dr. Moley, Siteman's associate director of clinical investigations, has particular expertise in performing re-operations on patients with recurrent endocrine cancers, who come from around the world for this surgery. Surgical approaches to endocrine tumors include minimally invasive parathyroidectomy and laparascopic adrenalectomy.

Specialized Services

Among the areas in which they have been pioneers is the treatment of medullary thyroid cancer, often part of the MEN-2 syndrome. For example, in patients who have been operated on previously, they have perfected a new technique using diagnostic laparoscopy and microdissection of the lymph nodes of the neck. They have also devised new ways to treat those MEN-2 patients who develop tumors of the adrenal or parathyroid glands.

On a daily basis, they work closely with radiation oncologists and endocrinologists. To focus the maximum expertise available on each patient's problem, they discuss their cases at regular endocrine oncology conferences.

They are also actively developing and participating in new clinical trials, including one protocol involving three-and-a-half gland versus total parathyroidectomy with transplant for patients with four-gland, parathyroid hyperplasia. Through the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), they are also in the process of setting up trials for primary or recurrent endocrine tumors in medullary thyroid carcinoma, papillary thyroid carcinoma, and hyperthyroidism.
