International Health - Centers of Excellence: Lung Volume Reduction

Overview

Patients come from around the world to undergo lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) at Washington University Medical Center. LVRS is an innovative emphysema treatment for patients that allow their lungs more "breathing room". By removing 20-30% of the overly distended diseased lung, it allows more space for the remaining lung to inflate.

Number of Procedures

Modern LVRS was pioneered by Washington University School of Medicine in 1993. Since then, over 350 lung volume reduction surgeries have been performed at Wasington University Medical Center.

Best Candidates

Approximately one in 10 people with emphysema are eligible for LVRS. If you can answer "yes" to four or more of the following criteria, you may qualify to be evaluated by one of our lung volume reduction specialists. (Your doctor can assist you in completing the checklist.)
  • Severe, disabling emphysema
  • Marked hyperinflation of lungs
  • FEV1 less than or equal to 40 percent predicted
  • No marked elevation of arterial carbon dioxide
  • Adequate cardiovascular function (able to perform basic daily activities)
  • Willing and able to meet goals of comprehensive rehabilitation program after surgery
  • Cessation of smoking six months prior to evaluation

  • Specialized Services

LVRS is not a cure for emphysema, but the procedure provides an alternative to lung transplant. It is also appropriate for patients who are not eligible for lung transplantation. The goal is to set the clock back five years. Patients must have severe emphysema and meet strict requirements to be considered a candidate for surgery.

Advantages of lung volume reduction surgery include:
  • Relieves shortness of breath
  • Increases energy level and physical mobility
  • Improves ability to function at work, housework, social life and hobbies
  • Provides an alternative for patients not suite for lung transplant and for those who have not responded to medication, respiratory care or other medical therapy
  • Creates a dramatic improvement in lung function (45-55% six months following surgery)
  • May decrease need for supplemental oxygen

  • Key Physicians

    Bryan F. Meyers, M.D.
    Stephen Lefrak, M.D.
    Roger D. Yusen, M.D.

    Advantages

The success of the lung volume reduction surgery program is made possible by the skilled surgeons, pulmonologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists and nurses who all have extensive experience working with lung and lung transplant patients. This multidisciplinary approach assures the highest standard of care.
