International Health - Centers of Excellence: Aneurysms
Washington University vascular surgeons have wide experience in the repair of all types of aneurysms, including those of the descending thoracic aorta, abdominal aorta, iliac artery, renal artery, visceral arteries or popliteal.
Number of Procedures
This is one of the largest endovascular aneurysm program in the world, performing more than 5.500 procedures, annually
Specialized Procedures
Either open surgical repair or endoluminal graft (stent placement) are used for the treatment of aneurysms.
Minimally invasive techniques for abdominal aortic aneurysm repair in selected patients mean shorter hospital stays, reduced risk of infections and quicker recovery. Older patients tolerate grafts more effectively, where there is no need to open the chest or abdomen and no backflow pressure placed on the heart. Routinely patients are in the hospital only overnight.
The choice of technique is determined by the individual case and patient anatomy.
This group pioneered the technique endovascular
abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR)
for abdominal aortic aneurysms.
