Coordinated Care for Spinal Tumors

“He not only kept me from being paralyzed – he saved my life.” This is just one patient’s testimony to the care he received from Dr. Jacob Buchowski and his associates at the Washington University Center for Spinal Tumors.

Symptoms of spinal tumors start with back pain, which most often occurs in the middle or lower back. There can also be weakness and difficulty with balance or walking.

According to Dr. Buchowski,  head of the Center for Spinal Tumors, “Tumors of the spine can be benign or malignant. Metastatic spinal tumors originate somewhere else in the body (such as the breast, lung, prostate or kidney) and spread to the spine. This is where they can cause fractures and/or compression of the spinal cord or nerves.”

Historically, patients diagnosed with spinal tumors have been required to coordinate their care from a variety of specialists, while dealing with a confusing array of choices. The Washington University Center for Spinal Tumors provides the expertise and comprehensive care necessary to effectively treat these complex situations – coordinating radiation, chemotherapy or surgical treatment, as needed.

Dr. Buchowski says, “I enjoy these complex and surgically challenging cases. Spine tumor patients have a difficult problem and face an uncertain future. It’s gratifying to be able to help them.”

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a spinal tumor, ask for a referral to the Washington University Center for Spinal Tumors for treatment or a second opinion. To make an appointment with Dr. Buchowski, call 314-514-3500.
