Scratching and Itching and Rashes - Oh, My!
Getting the garden ready, spring cleaning, camping – all herald the onslaught of contact dermatitis.
This skin condition is an instant allergic reaction to an external substance, or it can be a build-up of an immune response to something in the environment.
Common substances that cause contact dermatitis are plants such as poison ivy or poison oak, certain foods, cleaning solutions, detergents, cosmetics, perfumes, industrial chemicals, and latex rubber. Your down mattress topper, nickel jewelry or belt buckles, shampoos or hair dyes, and some medicines can also be suspected irritants.
Washington University Dermatology in West County
provides basic patch testing for contact dermatitis and skin allergies, using a product called True Test™. This includes testing for the 29 allergens most commonly responsible for contact allergy symptoms.
Extended patch testing is also provided for the hundreds of other skin allergens that are associated with certain professions or activities. The process starts with a consultation with the dermatologist who will schedule the patch test. Two days after the test, the patch is removed, and three days later the results are available.
Insurance usually covers contact dermatitis testing.
If you are someone you know would like some relief from contact dermatitis, please call
314-996-8010
, for a consultation.
