US NEWS RANKS BARNES-JEWISH $1 IN ST LOUIS, #1 IN MISSOURI AND HONOR ROLL OF BEST IN THE NATIONS
From Barnes-Jewish Hospital Office of Public Affairs, posted July 19, 2012, written by Jason Merrill.
July 17, 2012
ST. LOUIS — For the 20th consecutive year, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and its physician partners at Washington University School of Medicine are not only again the only St. Louis area hospital or medical institution listed among America’s elite medical centers in U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of “Best Hospitals,” but they also again rank #1 in both Missouri and the St. Louis metro area.
Barnes-Jewish earned honors as part of the news magazine’s Honor Roll, ranking sixth nationally while ranking in 15 individual specialties. Additionally, Barnes-Jewish was ranked regionally as the #1 hospital in Missouri and #1 in the St. Louis metro area.
Fewer than 150 of the almost 5,000 hospitals performed well enough to rank in even one of 16 specialties such as cancer and urology. Barnes-Jewish was ranked in the top fifteen in 15 of the 16 possible specialties. By individual specialty, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine rankings are:

The 2012 “Best Hospitals” list appears online Tuesday, July 17 at www.usnews.com/besthospitals and rankings will also appear in U.S. News’ annual guidebook, Best Hospitals 2013, available on newsstands mid-August.
The methodology U.S. News uses to rank 12 of 16 specialties is based on a mathematical model combining reputation, mortality rate, patient safety, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services. This year, U.S. News changed its methodology emphasizing measures with a direct link to the quality of patient care compared to more subjective reputation scores. The change to reputation data, coupled with the other methodology improvements made this year, contributed to some significant shifts in the rankings.
Hospitals in four remaining specialties – ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and rheumatology – are ranked solely based on their reputation among specialists.
As for the St. Louis Metro Area rankings, Barnes-Jewish again ranked number one in the region—an update of local rankings U.S. News, which began in March 2011. For the first time, the 2012 rankings offer a state-by-state listing of hospitals, ranking Barnes-Jewish as number one in Missouri.
