Spinal surgery refers to three main regions of the spinal column - cervical (back of neck), thoracic (back of chest) and lumbar (lower back).

In general, back problems that may require surgery include a hermiated or ruptured disk, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, tumors, infections or traumatic injury. Surgery may also be indicated for dislocations and fractures of the vertebrae or to block pain.

Decisions on which type of surgery is best are based on the patient's individual condition and the referring physician's preference.
