The Center is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians and surgeons who are experts in their fields and can care for your specific needs. The team includes physicians who specialize in breast imaging, surgery, medical and radiation oncology, and plastic surgery. Specialized nurse educators and other support services such as social work and health psychology are available

Most women who come to the Joanne Knight Breast Health Center are healthy and come to the center for regular screening mammograms as part of a routine check-up. Patients are reassured by receiving a written summary of their exam.

If there is an abnormality discovered in the mammogram, or there is a sign or symptom suggestive of a problem, you can receive a complete evaluation by a radiologist and/or surgeon and discuss the findings with our physicians - usually on the same day.

Breast imaging services include: mammography, ultrasound and image-guided needle biopsies. Services include:

  • Screening mammograms for women with no sign or symptom of breast cancer
  • Diagnostic mammograms for women with a problem or for those returning for follow-up of a problem
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Consultation with a breast imaging radiologist and/or breast surgeon
  • Second opinions
  • Needle biopsies - this could be a fine needle aspiration (FNA) to sample fluid or cells from a suspicious lump or could be a core biopsy to remove a small piece of tissue from a suspicious area in the breast seen on a mammogram or felt as a lump.
  • Multidisciplinary treatment planning
  • Risk assessment
  • Referrals for genetic counseling
  • Breast Cancer Care

Finding a lump in your breast or having an abnormal mammogram can be frightening. Women seen at the Joanne Knight Breast Health Center receive an expedited diagnosis and treatment plan in a personal but professional setting.

Affiliated with the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at the medical campus, patients have access to preeminent physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. If you are being treated for cancer, you will be cared for in a multidisciplinary program that draws on the expertise of one of the country's foremost cancer centers.

Rather than having to make appointments and travel to individual physician offices, specialists come to your examination room at the Center for Advanced Medicine. After visiting the Joanne Knight Breast Health Center, you will receive a follow-up letter describing treatment recommendations from our breast cancer specialists.
