The Department of Neurology, under the leadership of David Holtzman, M.D., offers a complete line of medical services in leading-edge treatment and research to offer adult and pediatric patients the latest solutions for treating neurologic disorders.
Nearly all of the 74 physicians in the department are board certified in adult neurology, pediatric neurology, or rehabilitation.
This Washington University Department provides clinical services to patients in the areas of adult neurology, rehabilitation, and pediatric neurology within the Washington University Medical Center, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis (RISTL), and the Central Institute for the Deaf.
In 2006, U.S. News & World Report ranked Washington University School of Medicine among the top four medical schools in the nation. The magazine also ranks Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s Department of Neurology as the best in Missouri and in the top 10 in the country. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department ranked at the top of all U.S. medical school neurology departments in research support. U.S. News & World Report and Child Magazine rank St. Louis Children's Hospital as one of America's best.
In addition to treating general adult and pediatric neurologic conditions, Washington University neurologists have expertise in a host of subspecialties. The links below direct you to information about a neurologic specialty, locations where patients are seen, and a list of neurologists treating those conditions.
LISTING OF SERVICES WITH APPOINTMENT PHONE NUMBERS
Specialized procedures offered include sleep studies, electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG). What Patients Should Expect
Washington University neurologists offer you comprehensive specialty services available at few centers in the nation. Our physicians include a number of regional and national experts in a department nationally recognized as a leader in advancing the noninvasive treatment for neurological problems.
Patients can be self-referred or referred by their physicians. After making an appointment, a patient history questionnaire will be mailed to you, to be completed prior to your visit. Please fill this out and bring it to your first appointment along with records of examinations, treatments and X-rays you have had.
New Frontiers in Neurology
All faculty are actively engaged in research, ranging from an investigation of cognitive processes in children with cerebral palsy to a host of clinical trials seeking new treatments for a variety of neurological disorders. This commitment to research aids the delivery of new, more effective methods of diagnosing and treating neurologic disorders.
Patients interested in participating in clinical research should work with their physicians to determine which studies might benefit them the most. Studies can be found on the Center for Clinical Studies web pages.
Regional/National Referrals
We treat many patients from outside the region and outside United States. For North American referrals, physicians may call the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Doctors Access Line at (800) 252-DOCS (3627).
Patients in the continental United States may refer to Family and Guest Services for assistance with lodging.
International Referrals
Physicians and patients from countries outside of the United States may view a complete list of our Centers of Excellence available for International Healthcare Referrals or physicians may contact us by email, with a short summary of the patient's diagnosis and your initial treatment plan. We will forward this summary to the right department for review and follow-up. Although English is preferred, you may email in your own language.
